The 41st annual Christmas Concert of the Virginia Glee Club was held December 4-5, 1981 in Old Cabell Hall under the direction of Donald Loach.
A Cavalier Daily article about the concert noted that the Glee Club's audience participation version of The Twelve Days of Christmas had by then become a tradition, and reported that "some alumni and members of the Charlottesville community return every year to sit in the same section."[1]
The Charlottesville-Albemarle Tribune reported: "Decorations, evergreens, candelabras, a processional and a wild audienceparticipation version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” make the Men’s Glee Club Christmas Concert one of the most popular on the University grounds. “Laudate Dominum” by Thomas Tallis and “Salve Regina” by Francesco Cavalli serve to show off the men’s chorus counter tenor section. “Salve Regina” will also include an instrumental quartet including Elizabeth Reed and Charles Marsh on oboes, Sharon Wood, bassoon, and Yvaine Duisit, harpsichord. Donald Loach is director of the Glee Club. The Virginia Gentlemen, a smaller group, directed by fourth-year student Matthew Freeman, will sing a medley of Spanish carols."[2]
