George I. Lyell was a member of the Claribel Club during 1874 and 1875. While a student at the University of Virginia he was also a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. Lyell does not appear in the Decennial Catalogue as a student and may already have graduated during this time.
Lyell had previously been a member of the Mendelssohn Society of Charlottesville and was mentioned in an 1874 newspaper review of their performance.
