The 1883-1884 season was a fallow year for the Virginia Glee Club. According to the Virginia University Magazine, the only musical organization on Grounds was the choir for the old chapel:

Our worthy Chaplain, Rev. Mr. Glazebrook, is making strenuous efforts to secure a choir for the University Chapel. There are numerous good voices in college and sufficient musical talent to insure a very respectable chorus. So now, gentlemen, come forward and let yourselves be known and assist in this praiseworthy enterprise.[1]
