The 1957-1958 season of the Virginia Glee Club was the first directed by David Davis. Officers included Palmer Rutherford, president; Wingfield Roberts, manager; Donald Ward, assistant manager; Robert Velle, librarian; Wilson Brown, assistant librarian; and Charles Nichols, publicity manager; the accompanist was Peter Cressman, and assistant accompanists included Warren Coleman and Ben Fulton. Performances included appearances with the Roanoke Symphony, concerts in Norfolk and Richmond, the Concert on the Lawn,[1] and the annual Christmas concert, which in 1957 was a joint appearance with the newly formed University Singers under the direction of Donald MacInnis.[2][3]
During this season, the Glee Club supplemented its income by becoming the exclusive sales agents of the Virginia Spectator magazine. The revenues were planned to help finance a European tour.[4]
In the University community, 1957–1958 was notable for concluding the term of William Faulkner's period as UVa's first Writer in Residence.[5]
