Virginia Glee Club Wiki

The 1973-1974 season of the Virginia Glee Club was one of transition as the University navigated its third year of full co-education. The first year dorms were overflowing with forced triples throughout the "new" dorms on Alderman Road and Terry Holland came to the University to begin his long tenure over the men's basketball program. The Club's fall semester was comprised of the traditional Opening Concert and Christmas Concerts. In January, long-time conductor Donald Loach departed for a sabbatical in Italy studying manuscripts of Josquin des Pres and others, and the Club came under the baton of the recently hired James Dearing. That same semester(?) saw the founding of the Virgnia Women's Chorus, also under the direction of Dearing, who was at the same time also serving as director of the University Singers. The Club's spring semester programming revolved around performances of the Faure Requiem in collaboration with the Mary Baldwin College Choir and the University and Community Symphony Orchestra. Officers included W. Steven Martin, president; Charles Dixon, business manager; Norman Warren, assistant business manager; and Michael Austin, librarian.
