Glory to virginia

"Glory to Virginia" in Songs of the University of Virginia

Glory to Virginia
is a University of Virginia football song that is first attested in the 1906 Songs of the University of Virginia. Sung to the tune of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," today the song is chiefly notable for having its chorus performed in combination with "From Rugby Road to Vinegar Hill" and "Fill Up Your Silver Goblet." In this combination, it has been recorded by the Virginia Glee Club on Songs of the University of Virginia, A Shadow's on the Sundial, and Songs of Virginia.

Authorship of the words is attributed to "W.A. '05" in Songs of the University of Virginia.

LyricsEdit

Come, every fellow give a cheer to Old Virginia's name;
Come, throw away dull care and strife and enter in the game;
We're here to win, we've won before; today we'll do the same,
As we go marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory! glory to Virginia!
Glory! glory to Virginia!
Glory! glory to Virginia!
As we go marching on.

We've wrestled with old Eli's sons--perhaps you know the score;
We've pulled the Tiger's striped tail--no doubt you heard him roar;
The tenor of our strength and fame goes surely on before
As we go marching on.

There goes the ball ten yards or more, it surely is a shame
But, brothers, you will own that football is a funny game;
So if we make a score or two we're surely not to blame
As we go marching on.
