James C. Austin (May 15, 1925 in Appomattox, Virginia – April 29, 2018)[1][2] was a member of the Virginia Glee Club during the Glee Club 1946-1947 season. Graduating in 1949, he was also a member of the Y.M.C.A., WUVA, and the Baptist Student Union.[3]
Austin also received a degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, where he was a medic during the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He earned a Bronze Star, the American Theatre Ribbon, and the Victory Medal Ribbon, in addition to being named a “Chevalier” of the Legion of Honor from France. He became a Baptist minister, pastoring churches in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Georgia. He was named a Kentucky Colonel by Kentucky Governor Alben Barkley.[4]
