The Rives Boat Club, founded April 17, 1877,[1][2] was the first rowing club at the University of Virginia. Active until the late 1880s, the Club had several Glee Club members as officers and rowers through its years, and was the beneficiary of fundraising concerts by University minstrel troupes in 1877-1878 and 1878-1879. It held the Southern championship for rowing for five years from the year of its founding.[3]
Charles Steele was a founding member of the Rives Boat Club.[2] The 1887-1888 season included Glee Club members Peter O. Adams, Charles T. Parrish, and Charles Willcox as officers or members.
