William Roane Aylett, Jr., (November 2, 1871 in Tappahannock, Virginia – April 25, 1942)[1] was the author of the words to the University of Virginia football song "Oh, Carolina." Aylett's father, William Roane Aylett, attended the University from 1850 to 1854,[2] and served as a Colonel in the Army of Northern Virginia as part of Armistead's 2nd Brigade in the Battle of Gettsyburg.[3]
Aylett Jr. graduated from the University in 1895 as a Doctor of Medicine.[4] He settled in Tappahannock and practiced medicine there,[5] becoming known as "our beloved physician" (the name on his tombstone).[1] He is buried in the cemetery of St. John's Church in Tappahannock, where a stained glass window is dedicated to his memory.[6]
